Outside, we were the perfect little girls. Even after my mom got our temporary custody back we needed to act a certain way in order for the social services to leave us in peace. I acted exactly the way they wanted me to be, but deep down I never gave up my own person. Instead of smoking, drinking, doing drugs, I was watching cartoons. I could have started this vicious cycle, but I didn’t. There were kids around 12 years old who were already starting to smoke cigarettes, and felt “so mature” for doing so. It’s not because we’re growing up that it means we need to abandon the stuff we love and start doing “adult things” to show how “mature we are”. It taught me to stay true to myself, and to not give up the things that made me happy. I may not had cool weapons and gadgets, even less vehicles to travel around the world, so I couldn’t fight the evil adults the same way the Kids Next Door did. It was the ray of hope for kids who needed it. We all had this desire to be with our favorite cartoon characters just because the cartoon is awesome and we wanted to be part of the team. I never wanted a cartoon to be real so much in my life before. Heck, I even started to wear a cap even during the night because I wanted to imitate my favorite character ! It was my way to cope with what was going on in my life, even if my sisters thought that was stupid and the character wasn’t “real”. Because the Kids Next Door help all kids, and the only help I needed at the time was to get back to my mom.
I remember looking up at the moon during the night thinking that Sector V would burst in the room and take me for amazing adventures, and especially to bring me back to my mom. The social workers wanted us to be exactly the way they wanted us to be: good, perfectly behaved children. For a while, I was a kid victim of adult tyranny. Because the social services thought she couldn’t handle us. We were even separated from our mom for a while. Trying to get away from my father’s violent behaviour was the hardest thing my mom, sisters and I ever did. I’ll try anyway.ĭuring the years 2002-2004, I went through the divorce of my parents.
